Home Cooked Dog Food Recipe

Home Cooked Dog Food Recipe is Quick and Easy

Home cooked or commercial food for your pet? That’s the question. This post doesn’t answer that question, but rather answers, “If I do want to cook for my pet…what should I cook?

Here’s an easy and pretty quick recipe that makes enough food for a few meals for one or two dogs:

Home made dog food - Chicken CasseroleCHICKEN CASSEROLE FOR DOGS

*Note: This home cooked dog food recipe can be made with chicken or turkey

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 lb bag of frozen chicken tenderloins (skinless, boneless)

Now you could use chicken breasts – you get less of them in the bag however, and they are thicker and therefore take longer to cook.

  • 12 oz package of frozen peas & carrots (don’t use canned, as it will have loads of salt)

  • 12 oz package of frozen spinach (or fresh is good too)

  • 2 Tablespoons of flax seed meal

  • 2 cups of plain oatmeal

  • 2 cups of chicken, beef or turkey stock (2 bullion cubes of same) *low sodium version!

INSTRUCTIONS

Cook 6 of the chicken tenderloins according to package directions (6 is about half of the bag, so you’ll have some leftover for next time).

While the chicken is in the oven, prepare the oatmeal using the stock. Pour the frozen veg into a large bowl. Add the flax seed meal and the cooked oatmeal. Mix all ingredients well and set aside.

When the chicken is done, remove it from the oven (leave oven on) and pour any meat drippings into the veg/oatmeal mixture. Cut each tenderloin into bite size cubes and add the meat to the veg. Mix well.

Pour mixture into a 13 x 9 (or so) baking dish. Spread evenly and return to oven for 20-25 minutes. Basically at this point your just heating it all through.

Once out of the oven, let the casserole sit and cool off. Be careful if serving your pets right away – they are more sensitive to food temperatures than we are, so make sure the food is no more than luke warm.

I serve them about a 1 1/2 cups each. I use this home cooked food in conjunction with a high quality kibble, so they get kibble in the mornings and chicken casserole at night.
